Kara Goucher on First Marathons

Here is an interesting interview from Kara Goucher on her marathoning experiences. I always find it reassuring to hear that even professionals get scared and injured! The comments below the article are also worth skimming through.

Apparently NYT's Health > Well section will have a weekly marathon article. Should be great!

concussed!

Once again, I look like this

Argh, what a week! Tuesday my laptop died without hope of inexpensive resuscitation, so Wednesday I bought a fancy schmancy new one. It's so weird to me that you can just walk into a store and five minutes later have a new computer. It's the first one I didn't order online. Yay for new computers...boo for how am I going to pay for it?!

I set off on a 6 mile run this morning, excited that it's warming up a bit. My first mile was pretty fast for a warmup for me (9:24), and I felt great. Just as I was checking my first mile pace on Garmin, I tripped on some uneven sidewalk and landed half on the sidewalk, half off. Apparently I broke the fall perfectly on my right side, because I only have a bruised knee on that side, but with the sidewalk being a couple inches off the dirt, my whole left side plowed right onto it.

My face rammed into the sidewalk, and I could feel my nose hurt right away. Luckily I was running with my bf and he made me get up right away. I felt really dizzy so I sat on the curb, and he kneeled in front of me. I got dizzier and dizzier and suddenly realized that I could only see black with some blue (his coat) fading in and I realized that apparently I couldn't see anything for a couple seconds there! I blacked out for a little bit! I was really shook up but could walk the mile home and after an hour, some ibuprofen, and a shower my headache was gone.

I ended up going to the doctor this morning and he said I had a mild concussion that cleared rapidly...thank goodness! I've never blacked out like that before! Now, I've just got a small cut on my nose, a little swelling, and a ripped up hip, elbow, knee, and thigh. The doctor is a little concerned with my nose, and I go back on Monday to make sure it's straight (it's swollen a little crooked right now). Hopefully the swelling will go away!

Luckily I haven't shown any symptoms of a concussion since the first hour...no headache, numbness, dizziness, etc. I skipped my first spinning class just to take it easy tonight (and worked instead :( ), and I'll see how my knee feels getting some biking and/or running tomorrow.

Here's to hoping everything recovers quickly! On the bright side, look what I can do on my new laptop! Pictures!!

Have a great weekend all!

Yoga DVD?

Can anyone recommend a good yoga DVD? I'm pretty inflexible so a beginner one is probably best. I need to stretch out my legs/hips!

Hiatus

Hey all,

It started with telling myself, "I'll post soon..." and developed into "well, it's been too long now..."

There's too much going on between teaching, research, and training. Yes, I have kept up training! I wish I could put in more miles and cross-training, but for three days a week the results from the FIRST program have been great. I can't wait for Bayshore!

So, I have to declare an official hiatus from this blog. I'm hoping I'll find some time and inspiration come April when the semester is over! In the meantime, I'm going to try to run some races and hopefully I'll post the reports. Maybe I'll start up a twitter-like blog of 140 character posts. :) I've still been reading blogs, in a silly way that whenever I get a free moment (or a problem I don't want to confront) I'll open a new tab and go straight to reader. I'll get back to commenting soon!

Talk to you soon,

Meg

the great outdoors

Sorry for all the complaining in my last post. I have to mention that I've had some great runs outside over the last couple weeks. These probably should have been separate posts but I've been busy! I'll try to keep each one short.

Almost two weeks ago, I took TNTchoach Ken's advice and showed up at a Hash. The meeting point was less than a half mile from my house the very week I had posted that I was thinking about checking them out, so I figured I was meant to go! I managed to convince a friend and my boyfriend to go with me, and we wandered over to where the directions said to meet. We arrived and the three of us were invited to cram into a car (already with four people in it) and have a beer. Car by car more people arrived and about a half hour later we were inside introducing ourselves. These people are hilarious and very energetic. I loved it! We opted for the three mile route, which kicked my butt with some steep hills through the woods in about a foot of snow (mostly unshoveled!). After a while we were left alone and pretty confused because we didn't know what all of the marks meant, but luckily we ended up with the Hare so were guided straight to the beer check. At this point I was cold and wet enough that I just wanted to get inside, but I enjoyed talking to people. We had naively assumed that since it was a three mile run we'd only be outside for a half hour. We didn't realize that the run would be so challenging, long, or that we would be standing outside having a beer afterwards! We almost went home straight after the beer check because of the cold, but a bunch of the Hashers protested saying that afterwards was the best part. Naive again! Luckily there were others that were cold and we knew how to get directly back to the cars so we led everyone on a shortcut off the trail back to the starting point.

Again, we almost went home but were convinced to grab a ride to the Hare's house for the hash. I was more up for it than my boyfriend was because I was kind of swept up by the excitement of everyone else. We rode over in the back of a van, and as we got out carrying two cases of beer it hit me: we're about to go into a guy's house, that we don't know, with a bunch of beer, and hang out. This is weird. Still, they were super inviting and I had a great time. They have some awesome rituals! I can't say enough that everyone was so nice and inviting. I definitely want to go back next time they're in Ann Arbor!

Last Friday I got my butt out of bed, strapped on my head lamp, and went for a six mile loop outside. It reminded me how much I like running outside! I was able to do a 2 mile easy-2 mile tempo-2 mile easy run as prescribed by week 1 of the FIRST plan. Unfortunately the 2 mile tempo part fell during an icy and hilly area, but I just tried to push through it and came out just over my target pace. I was expecting to be way over so happy with that!

Saturday was the first of the long training runs, eight miles. I had to get up early, so the rest of the runners in my dept opted to do it on their own later in the day, but my bf wanted to do it with me. Excellent! Noting that the high for the day was going to be 16F, we decided to do some windbreaker shopping. We went over to a local outdoor store that he knew was having a sale on jackets, only the sale was only for Men's jackets. I found a Marmot rain jacket that was 25% off. I took it up to the register, and it was like half the amount I thought it would be. I questioned the price and the sales girl noted that it was 25% off, plus an extra 15% off. I shrugged it off, noting that it still didn't add up, but whatever it was way cheaper than I thought. Good deal! I got home and looked at the receipt and saw 57% off! No matter how you do the math, that $99 jacket with a 25% and 15% discount does not add up to a $43 jacket. As unethical as it may be I didn't take it back to tell them!

The eight miler was COLD. The jacket worked out, as my core was warm the whole time, but whenever we hit any elevation the wind would freeze my face. I need a face mask but I refuse to get one and look like a weirdo. :) Here are some pictures from the run:

Tuesday I was due for five miles with intervals. I wasn't feeling too hot in the morning so I pushed it off to the evening. By the time I got home it was freezing out and I easily could have been talked into skipping it. My bf wanted to do three outside so we made a deal that if the temperature violated the double digit rule (whereby I only run outside if the temperature is above 10F), we'd skip it. We were surprised that it was 18F out so we got dressed and hit the road. We only did three, but I felt I challenged myself and had a great time. We warmed up for a mile, and then every few minutes we'd sprint for up to two minutes. I ended up with one two minute sprint and three 1:30 sprints, all of which were between 7:30 and 7:45/mile. That's pretty good for my current state! The run ended up being a ton of fun and not very cold so I am glad I made it out.

This morning violated the double digit rule, so I hit the treadmill. I did weights last night so my legs felt like bricks, but I got it done. I'm glad that's over! I would really like to add some cross training in, but I think I need to add it in slowly as my muscles clearly aren't used to being worked too many days in a row.

Have a great end of the week everyone!

I need Emily Post at the gym!

Anyone else noticing a lack of gym etiquette now that it's more crowded? I've seen empty treadmills when someone is signed up, but I don't want to get on just to have the person show up and kick me off mid-run, or maybe they are late because someone else was late with their previous machine. A couple weeks ago I couldn't get a treadmill so I signed up for a bike, just to have some older man get on the bike while I was walking from the signup sheet to the bike. I didn't say anything because I felt awkward and felt disrespectful asking an elder to move his skinny butt, but I was kicking myself for not saying something later. Just because you're old doesn't mean you can bend the rules! I think that there is probably the same lack of etiquette from certain people all the time, but it's not noticeable when there are more free machines.

I must look like such a weirdo sometimes! Last week I walked over to the treadmill signup, looked back at the treadmills to see what was actually open, didn't see any, signed up for a bike, walked over to the bike to see someone was on it, walked back to the signup sheet, looked back at treadmills, signed up for a type of bike I don't like, adjusted and got on the bike, pedaled for a minute, saw someone get off of a treadmill, got off the bike, went over to the signup sheet, claimed the treadmill, used that for 10 minutes, and then transferred to another open treadmill.

I'm seriously ready to start asking people to give up their New Years Resolutions. Last week my boyfriend and I had planned on going to our respective gyms after work. He dropped me off at mine, then went to the climbing gym. The time it would take to drive to his gym, climb, and come back to pick me up was about as much I needed to change and run. I went to the locker room, and while changing I overheard a conversation between two girls next to me. It went something like this:

Girl 1: I'm so sick of the gym being crowded. It's great you have goals and all, but where were you the rest of the year? You're going to give up your resolutions at some point!
Girl 2: Yeah, it's hard to get a machine
Girl 1: Now when I get here I sign up for a treadmill before changing. There aren't any treadmills available until 6:45! I'm glad I signed up first!

I look at my watch, note that it's 6pm and I won't be able to get more than 15 minutes before I'm supposed to be picked up. Leaving the locker room I texted my boyfriend and he offered to pick me up because he was tired anyway. I went right back into the locker room and changed!

So I'm ready for either some warmth or an empty gym! A happier post later this week, I promise!
